Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a procedure that uses electromagnetic pulses to target the sections of your brain responsible for mood and functioning. TMS has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration since 2008 to treat adults with Major Depressive Disorder that have not responded to at least one medication.

At NorCal Neurostimulation, we utilize Neurostar Advanced TMS therapy: an outpatient treatment that takes as little as 19 minutes per session. A study of real-world outcomes reported an 83% response rate which means patients experienced notable relief, and a 62% remission rate which means their depression effectively went away.

Our Approach

Research & Analytics

TMS has been approved for adults with major depression that have tried at least one medication since 2008. It has been approved for adults with OCD since 2017, and is currently being researched for indiviudals experiencing PTSD, tinnitus, anxiety, and other mental health diagnoses.  We offer Neurostar TMS Advanced TMS Therapy at our practice to help those struggling with depression.

Our Methods

NeuroStar is a safe, effective non-drug depression treatment that uses focused magnetic pulses, similar in strength to an MRI, to revitalize connections in an area of the brain involved in regulating mood. When these connections are reawakened, many people experience measurable relief from their depression.

Want to learn more? Give us a call to discuss if you're a good candidate for TMS and to schedule an in person neuromodulation consultation with one of our expert providers. Please call the office to discuss your interest in neuromodulation.

What does treatment entail?

TMS treatments typically occur daily and in person for 4-6 weeks. An initial MT (Motor Threshold) determination appointment determines what strength and location will be used for daily treatment. Daily treatments are administered by a qualified TMS Technician, but patients are supported through regular follow ups with their  phsycian.

Does it Hurt?

While there may be some minor discomfort at the treatment site (where the device touches your head), it generally subsides within the first week of treatment. There is no sedation, or impact on your alertness. You can read, watch TV, or talk with your treatment coordinator during your session, and you can drive home immediately after treatment.

Real Results

A study of real-world outcomes reported 83% of patients undergoing TMS experienced notable relief of their depression, and 62%  reported their depression was in remission.*
